The W3C Design Tokens Community Group's format spec is the shared standard tools like Figma variables and Penpot's token system are building toward. It's not new or exciting, but it's becoming baseline knowledge.
This isn't a trend — it's infrastructure. **Label: established** — the spec has been in active development for a few years and is the reference point most design tool vendors now align to when they build tokens/variables features. For someone early-career working across Figma and Penpot, understanding tokens (colour, spacing, typography as named, reusable values) is quietly becoming an expected skill in design-system-literate teams, not a nice-to-have. It's less flashy than AI features but shows up in interview questions more than you'd expect.
