Design systems coverage keeps circling back to tokens as the link between design files and code — not a nice-to-have anymore.

If you've been putting off learning design tokens because they sound like a "senior" concern, the ongoing design systems commentary suggests otherwise. Tokens (named values for colour, spacing, type) are increasingly treated as basic hygiene, not an advanced feature — and both Figma and Penpot now support defining and exporting them. Knowing how to set up a small token set, even just colours and spacing, is a concrete, checkable skill you can show in a portfolio walkthrough.
