A 2026 review found Penpot generates CSS, SVG and HTML straight from the file, shrinking the usual gap between design tokens and shipped code.
Design systems fall apart in the gap between 'what the file says' and 'what the code does'. A recent Penpot-vs-Figma review found Penpot's rendering model exports real CSS/SVG/HTML directly from your design, so spacing and token values are less likely to drift once handed to engineering - a smaller version of the classic design-dev argument. That's not nothing for design systems work specifically: fewer manual re-translations of tokens means fewer chances for inconsistency to creep in. It's not a reason to rip out your current system, and Figma's ecosystem for managing large component libraries is still deeper - but if drift between file and shipped product is your team's actual pain point, it's worth a proper trial rather than dismissing it as 'just another Figma clone'.
