Penpot is leaning into native W3C-aligned design tokens, contrasting with Figma's variables, which stay largely locked to its own ecosystem. It's a small but real signal that design systems are being built for portability across tools.
A recent Penpot vs Figma comparison for enterprise teams highlights a genuine architectural difference: Figma's variables work brilliantly inside Figma but need extra work to export anywhere else. Penpot's tokens follow the open W3C design tokens format, meant to move cleanly between design and dev tooling without vendor-specific glue code.
This matters for design systems work specifically — a system that only lives well in one tool is a fragile system. It's not a dramatic shift yet (most teams are still Figma-variables-first), but it's a useful adoption-stage signal to watch if you care about token portability, multi-tool teams, or open standards in general.
