More design tools are aligning with the open design tokens format, making it easier to move styles between Figma, Penpot and code. Understanding tokens is turning into a basic skill, not a specialist one.
Design tokens — reusable values for colour, spacing, type — used to be a 'design systems team' concern. That's changing as more tools support open, portable token formats, meaning styles can move between Figma, Penpot and codebases without everything being rebuilt by hand each time.
This is **adoption**, not a fresh trend: tokens have existed for years, but tool support catching up to the standard is what's making them practical for smaller teams and solo designers, not just enterprise design systems.
For a junior designer, knowing how tokens work (and why they're not just 'fancy styles') is becoming as expected as knowing your way around auto-layout.
