Design tokens — naming your colours, spacing and type as reusable variables rather than one-off styles — used to be a "nice big company" thing. Now it's expected even on smaller systems, because it's what lets a design move between Figma, Penpot and code without redoing the work by hand. Figma's variables and Penpot's token support are both built around this idea, and Design Systems News keeps tracking teams standardising around it. If you've only ever used local styles in Figma, tokens are the next skill worth learning — it's the difference between "I made this look consistent" and "I built something a team can actually maintain."
