More tools are aligning around the W3C design tokens format, meaning tokens built in one tool are starting to travel to others. That's a big deal for teams mixing Figma and Penpot.
The push toward a common, open design tokens format has been building for a couple of years, and this year's coverage shows it's now genuinely cross-tool rather than a Figma-only concept. That matters for design systems work specifically: colour, spacing and type decisions defined once can, in theory, flow into whichever tool your team uses without manual re-entry. It's adoption, not hype — the format's been stable long enough that teams are shipping real systems on it, though tooling support still varies in completeness. If you're building a portfolio piece around a design system, showing you understand tokens (not just components) signals you get how systems actually scale.
